Podcasts for Research and Public Engagement in Singapore

As podcasts grow in popularity, they are also increasingly used within academia for research and teaching. socialservice.sg, a website dedicated to social service research, practice, and policies run by the author/speaker, started producing podcasts during Singapore’s first COVID-19 lockdown in April 2020. After sharing research insights about Singaporean youth civic and community engagement during the 2020 circuit-breaker (podcast first season, “COVID-19 Community Chronicles”) and youth civic and political participation during and beyond GE2020 (second season, “The Nine Days”), the seminar will explore the strengths and limitations associated with podcast usage and considers potential benefits to researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and educators.
Jin Yao Kwan studies the positive development, well-being, and civic engagement of children, adolescents, and youth, especially those from low-income and marginalised/disadvantaged backgrounds. He graduated with his social welfare Ph.D. from UCLA. He also runs socialservice.sg, a website, podcast, and newsletter dedicated to Singaporean social service research, practice, and policies.
DISCUSSANT
Kenneth Paul Tan is Professor of Politics, Film, and Cultural Studies at Hong Kong Baptist University, which hired him under its Talent100 initiative. He teaches and conducts interdisciplinary research at the Academy of Film, the Department of Journalism, the Department of Government and International Studies, and the Smart Society Lab.
